Why do you need one?
Photographers can spend many hours over the course of a month compensating for the colour balance of their images, which is not only time consuming but also a waste of productivity. It also has implications for the image which will be manipulated in 8 bit colour depth therefore reducing the quality of the original file.
If the file had been captured with Full Colour Balance with a CBL Lens then the time would be saved in post processing but also the original file would be already in its true colour with better sharpness and clarity than a processed replication of the original subject.
Photographers would then have a better original image to work with and more time to creatively edit their shots.
How do you use CBL?
A CBL Lens is a disk which should be held at arms length or placed in front of the lens to reflect the “incident” light falling on your subject into the lens of your camera to set the custom colour balance for your camera.
It is very fast to use and the camera can be left in AF mode with the lens hood on. Simply select the custom colour balance feature of your camera, hold up the disk & autofocus on the disk, fire a shot and save the new setting.
CBL Lenses are even supplied with a soft case for safe keeping and a lanyard strap to keep your CBL around your neck for ease and speed of use.
CBL Lens technology is designed to provide Full Colour Balance by reflecting the full colour data of the spectrum from the light falling on a subject into the lens of your camera & the CMOS/CCD in order to set your camera to capture fully colour balanced & natural images.
How does it work?
There are 4 components to each CBL Lens.
Housing
Grooved Board
Diffuser Lens
Reflective Lens
The 18% grey housing which can be used in studio or direct lighting situations which has grooves and raised moulded lettering to create light and shadow areas for accurate full colour balance readings and to create detail for your AF areas for accurate full colour balance readings and to create detail for your AF system to focus on. This housing is made from a blend of primary materials (rather than being printed) to ensure total colour accuracy in all lighting situations.
The white grooved board works in combination with the diffuser lens and reflective lens to capture light from all directions which is falling on the subject and reflect this colour information into the lens of your camera.
The grooved board is particularly effective in capturing light in mixed lighting situations as even light above or beside a subject will be caught by the board , as it would be on the contours of your face, due to its ridged design.
The small slots in this board allow light to pass through it to the reflective disc creating a prism effect which splits the light into its spectral components.
In all the CBL system is an innovative and comprehensive solution to measure and capture images with “Full Color Balance”.
3 Sizes Available
There are 3 sizes of CBL Lenses available. Any one of them could be used with any lens regardless of diameter.
We would recommend the Large CBL 110mm for professional use, or where more wide angle lenses are used as it has the largest target and will provide the most comprehensive colour information for measuring Full Colour Balance
The Medium CBL 85mm is for professional/semi professional use or where longer lenses are fitted to your camera.
The Small CBL 65mm is ideal for video or where the sensor area of your viewfinder for colour balance measurement is the centre circle, such as on the Canon EOS 5D. At arms length the small CBL Lens disc will fill the centre circle of a Canon 5D with a 50mm lens fitted.
CBL Lens is not simply for White Balance but is an innovative and more comprehensive solution to measure and capture images with “Full Color Balance”.
