Sony NEX-5: My First Impression

On paper this camera offers a fantastic array of features: 1080p HD movie recording, interchangeable lenses, articulating 3” screen with TruBlack technology, 14.2 megapixel APS-HD sensor, and full manual and automatic shooting capabilities. But what does this mean to the user?

The 3” screen is quickly becoming the standard size for cameras of any format, whether compact or DSLR, but Sony has produced one of the most practical on the market with the inclusion of their TruBlack technology. The TruBlack system puts a non-reflective layer on the screen to easier to use in bright sunlight as well as providing a lighting system to brighten the screen if the necessary. This is a fantastic feature as an optical viewfinder is an additional accessory rather than a standard on the NEX-5

1080p HD movie is the best quality videoing that is currently available to both cameras and camcorders alike but is by no means a regular feature. The NEX-5 is unique in its offering of the HD movie because it couples it with autofocus in movie mode which is not currently offered by another camera. For those most interested in the filming capabilities of the NEX-5, Sony have produced a stereo microphone that sits in the mount on top and offers 90o and 120o sound recording, depending on the need.

The NEX-5 is a camera that offers all the ease of a compact but with the addition of interchangeable lenses that provide a better image quality. There are three lenses currently available for the NEX system: 16mm f2.8 (ideal to panoramic shots and low light conditions); 18-55 f3.5 - 5.6 OSS (standard kit lens with good Optical SteadyShot (image stabilisation) and metal lens shell for excellent durability); and 18-200 f3.5 – 6.3 OSS (great zoom lens with stabilisation and Active Mode for steadier shooting in movie mode). This is not the limit of the NEX lens quiver, however, as Sony have produced a mount adapter to allow the Alpha series lenses from their DSLR range to work with the NEX series cameras.
